of Cornwall and beyond.
There are wonderful beaches to explore, a short drive from both Atlantic
Reach and Lakeview, along the north coast either side of Newquay to Padstow
and beyond. The Cornish Coastal Path runs the entire stretch. It offers the opportunity
for short strolls or serious hikes with unsurpassed views.
Beaches south of Newquay include Crantock, Polly Joke and Hollywell Bay. Newquay
itself has a superb choice including Fistral, Porth, Lusty Glaze, Tolcarne
and Pentire.
Closest to home are the coves north of Newquay, running up to Padstow and beyond. The local slogan “7 Bays for 7 days “, sums up the choice.
Beaches include;
Watergate Bay, a wide bay of golden sand, backed by high cliffs with watersports
including the Sports Academy which has tuition in surfing and kite surfing.
Jamie Oliver’s “15” Restaurant is based here..
Mawgan Porth A popular family beach with summer cafes and bars..
Bedruthan Steps has spectacular rock formations. This is a quieter option
with a National Trust Tea Shop perched above the cliffs and a car park.
Porthcothan is a sheltered bay, much favoured by families.
Padstow offers fabulous vistas of golden sands on either side of the estuary.
Inland and even closer, a 5 minute drive from Lakeview, good walking is
afforded along the Camel Trail, a stretch of scenic railway (long disused),
running beside the River Camel, through Wadebridge and into Padstow. In
beautiful countryside, stretching from Bodmin Moor through the wooded Camel
valley to the estuary, this has been reinvented as a dedicated cycling,
walking and riding route, with the award winning Camel Valley Vineyard as
a welcome stopover en route or lunch in pretty Wadebridge or delightful
Padstow where cycle or pony hire are options. . .
An alternative is ‘The Saints Way’, an ancient way stretching
from the picturesque Fowey valley to Padstow, formerly used by travellers
en route between Europe and Ireland, who preferred it to the sometimes perilous
alternative of sailing round Land’s End.
The gardens of Cornwall are famous for their subtropical planting and spring
time colour. There are historic houses and gardens close at hand, including
the ‘Lost Gardens of Heligan’ and Lanhydrock and Trerice, both
beautiful National Trust properties. The world famous Eden Project is a
15 minute drive from Lakeview. This runs events throughout the year including
the biggest winter ice skating rink in the UK.
